Different organizations require different model structures
Business models differ in how resources develop, customers interact, and outcomes are produced. Advanced modeling requires the judgment to select structures that reflect these differences while maintaining a clear connection to the question being investigated.
Extend modeling across sectors and operating contexts
Develop models suited to commercial and public-sector organizations. Examine how customer, beneficiary, employee, asset, and capacity relationships shape the structure required for each case.
Integrate complexity with a clear analytical purpose
Represent segmentation, delays, installed bases, two-sided markets, and interconnected business units. Evaluate when additional detail improves the analysis, integrate relevant structures, and validate how the completed model supports the intended strategic or operational decision.
Practical Capabilities for Organizational Value
Select appropriate model structures
Evaluate the organizational context and analytical purpose, then select resource and operating structures that represent the relationships relevant to the decision being examined.
Model across organizational contexts
Represent customers, beneficiaries, employees, assets, capacity, and service outcomes across commercial and public-sector organizations, adapting the model to their different operating relationships.
Represent advanced operating relationships
Incorporate delays, durable products, installed bases, two-sided markets, and intermediated channels, explaining how these structures influence resource development and performance over time.
Apply segmentation purposefully
Determine when segmentation provides meaningful analytical insight, define appropriate groups, and assess how their different characteristics affect the behavior of the wider system.
Integrate business units and sub-models
Construct connected sub-models that represent business units or operating functions, maintain consistent relationships between them, and examine their contribution to consolidated organizational outcomes.
Evaluate and explain model quality
Examine model structure, assumptions, and validation evidence, and communicate the implications and limitations clearly enough to support leadership review and informed decision-making.
Extend internal modeling capability
Develop the ability to address a broader range of strategic and operational questions using structures suited to the organization's activities and decision requirements.
Connect planning across business units
Establish consistent relationships between unit-level models, making dependencies and shared resource requirements visible within an integrated view of organizational plans and projected outcomes.
Reveal differences within aggregate results
Examine customer, beneficiary, product, or operational segments to identify differences that influence performance and may be obscured when results are assessed only in aggregate.
Strengthen model review
Build internal capability to examine models developed by colleagues or external advisors, assess their assumptions, and evaluate whether their structure supports the intended application.
Model non-financial outcomes
Represent service quality, workload, reliability, and other nonfinancial outcomes through relevant operating relationships, supporting a broader understanding of how organizational resources contribute to performance.
Retain advanced analytical expertise
Establish internal expertise that can adapt and maintain complex models, support recurring strategic questions, and inform the use of specialist external support when needed.

Practical Tools for Continued Application
Use the modeling workspace introduced during the program to explore sector examples, construct advanced relationships, and integrate sub-models. Examine how structural choices influence the behavior and application of the completed model.
Retain the worked models used to examine different organizational contexts. Review their resource structures, operating relationships, and assumptions to understand how the method is adapted to specific business types and questions.
Use a structured reference to assess which modeling approaches fit the case. Review the purpose and application of different structures, and document the reasoning behind choices about scope, segmentation, and integration.

Meet the Method's Originator
Kim Warren
Originator of Strategy Dynamics
Kim developed the powerful Strategy Dynamics method when a strategy professor at London Business School. Standard strategy tools simply could not explain what, exactly, to do to deliver better performance into the future. He translated the solid, engineering-based principles of system dynamics into managerial language and a practical process organizations can apply to modeling any strategy, initiative or challenge.
Kim is author of the award-winning Competitive Strategy Dynamics (Wiley, 2002) and Strategic Management Dynamics (Wiley, 2008). He now offers a wide range of online courses to show leaders how to use “digital twin” business models and to train analysts and consultants in building those models.

PROGRAM-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
What is the focus of CSDE?
CSDE extends business modeling capabilities across different organizational contexts and more complex structures. It covers segmentation, delays, durable products, two-sided markets, nonfinancial outcomes, and interconnected business units.
Do I need to complete CSDM first?
Completing CSDM is strongly recommended. CSDE assumes familiarity with the foundational Strategy Dynamics modeling process. If you have equivalent practical experience, contact us to discuss whether the program matches your current capabilities.
How does CSDE differ from CSDM?
CSDM establishes the capabilities required to construct and validate a working business model. CSDE develops the judgment and technical application needed to adapt that approach across business types and advanced operating structures.
What is Silico?

Silico is the application used for the program's modeling activities. Account setup guidance is provided before the program so that participants can prepare for the practical sessions.
