Keep capacity ahead of demand, and cut the cost per case
Strengthen the basis for strategic decisions
Leaders need to assess whether a plan's objectives are supported by the resources and conditions required to achieve them. Understanding these relationships helps leadership teams evaluate proposals, recognize constraints, and steer the strategy as it is implemented.
Understand the organization as a connected system
Examine how customers, employees, capacity, and other resources develop over time and influence organizational outcomes. Use this perspective to evaluate objectives, understand performance drivers, and assess how leadership decisions affect the conditions for future success.
Use working models to evaluate strategic choices
Explore prepared models, adjust decisions, and compare scenarios to understand their implications. Develop the questions needed to examine assumptions, identify resource constraints, and assess the reasoning behind a plan before it is approved or revised.
Practical Capabilities for Organizational Value
Interpret organizational performance
Explain how resources, operating relationships, and decisions influence performance over time, establishing a clearer basis for evaluating strategic proposals and reported outcomes.
Evaluate strategic objectives
Assess whether objectives express appropriate outcomes and identify targets that could encourage unintended behavior or weaken the organization's longer-term performance.
Recognize weaknesses in a plan
Examine whether objectives are sufficiently ambitious, achievable under stated assumptions, and consistent with the wider outcomes the organization intends to deliver.
Explore models and scenarios
Use working models to adjust decisions, compare alternative scenarios, and interpret the implications for resources, constraints, and performance across the planning horizon.
Assess decision authority and influence
Distinguish decisions that directly determine resource flows from those that influence them, and assess the implications for leadership action and resource allocation.
Identify feedback and timing effects
Recognize how feedback, delays, and dependencies affect a plan’s behavior, and consider how those relationships influence the timing and effectiveness of proposed actions.
Strengthen strategic review
Establish leadership discussions that examine the assumptions, resource requirements, and operating relationships behind a plan, improving the basis for approval and revision.
Improve objective setting
Evaluate proposed objectives against organizational resources and operating conditions, clarifying the changes required to support their achievement before commitments are made.
Develop a shared performance perspective
Build a common understanding of how the organization produces results, supporting more consistent discussions across leadership, planning, finance, and operational teams.
Identify delivery constraints earlier
Recognize resource gaps, timing requirements, and dependencies during planning, creating opportunities to adjust decisions while implementation options remain available.
Reduce unintended target effects
Examine how targets influence decisions and behavior, and identify where their design could undermine service quality, capability development, or longer-term strategic outcomes.
Improve the quality of approval
Apply a consistent approach to evaluating strategic proposals, comparing alternatives, and documenting the reasoning behind leadership decisions and resource commitments.

Practical Tools for Continued Application
Use the modeling workspace introduced during the program to explore prepared models, adjust decisions, and compare scenarios. Examine how the relationships represented in a model influence projected organizational performance.
Retain the working case model used throughout the program. Revisit its assumptions, explore alternative scenarios, and reinforce your understanding of the relationships between leadership decisions, organizational resources, and performance.
Apply a structured set of questions when reviewing a strategic proposal. Examine objectives, resource requirements, assumptions, and constraints, and document the issues requiring clarification before approval or further evaluation.

Meet the Method's Originator
Kim Warren
Originator of Strategy Dynamics
Kim developed the powerful Strategy Dynamics method when a strategy professor at London Business School. Standard strategy tools simply could not explain what, exactly, to do to deliver better performance into the future. He translated the solid, engineering-based principles of system dynamics into managerial language and a practical process organizations can apply to modeling any strategy, initiative or challenge.
Kim is author of the award-winning Competitive Strategy Dynamics (Wiley, 2002) and Strategic Management Dynamics (Wiley, 2008). He now offers a wide range of online courses to show leaders how to use “digital twin” business models and to train analysts and consultants in building those models.
